#170 Jordan Rose- Drummer for Theo Katzman, Cory Wong, Caleb Hawley & More!
Native of Houston, Texas, drummer Jordan Rose has performed at festivals and venues throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, Asia, and the Middle East. From 2012-2014 Jordan toured extensively with multi-Grammy award winner, Joe Louis Walker. He now resides in Brooklyn, New York where his talents as a session drummer have given him the opportunity to collaborate with musicians Charlie Puth, Jeff Coffin, Nona Hendryx, Bakithi Kumalo, Louis Cato, and many others. This year Jordan is touring with Theo Katzman of Vulfpeck, The Blues Brothers, and Caleb Hawley, and is scheduled to perform across the US, Europe, and Russia.
From 2007-2010 Jordan fought a battle with a growth in his right ear which caused him to lose almost all hearing. Due to modern medicine and miraculous healing, his hearing was restored. From this three year period of trial and uncertainty, Jordan gained an even deeper love, appreciation, and excitement for music and a greater understanding of the intense power it has to impact lives. As he shares his talents in drumming, he hopes that he can bring the same life-changing positivity to the world that music has brought to him.
Happy Birthday Roy Haynes!
ROY HAYNES is the pulse of legendary jazz. For over 70 years Roy Haynes has influenced and innovated, shaping some of the greatest recordings in jazz while his joyous drumming with the legends of the genre altered the very fabric and direction of jazz improvisation. Louis Armstrong. Lester Young. Charlie Parker. Thelonius Monk. Sarah Vaughn. Miles Davis. John Coltrane. Dizzy Gillespie. Bud Powell. Ella Fitzgerald. Stan Getz. Chick Corea. Pat Metheny. The list goes on and on as does Roy's unflagging energy and marvelous invention.
R.I.P. Wallace Roney Sr., Manu Dibango, and Bucky Pizzarelli.
Wallace Roney earned the admiration and respect of his colleagues and his elders since age 16. He has been an integral part of the band with Tony Williams, Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Walter Davis Jr., Herbie Hancock, Jay McShann, David Murray, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Curtis Fuller, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Dizzy Gillespie to name a few. He was one of the few musicians in his generation who learned and perfected his craft directly from alliances with Jazz Masters. But his most important and meaningful relationship was with Miles Davis.
Emmanuel N'Djoké "Manu" Dibango (12 December 1933 – 24 March 2020)[2] was a Cameroonian musician and songwriter who played saxophone and vibraphone. He developed a musical style fusing jazz, funk, and traditional Cameroonian music. His father was a member of the Yabassi ethnic group, though his mother was a Duala. He was best known for his 1972 single "Soul Makossa." He died from COVID-19 on 24 March 2020.[3]
John Paul "Bucky" Pizzarelli (January 9, 1926 – April 1, 2020) was an American jazz guitarist. He was the father of jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli and double bassist Martin Pizzarelli. He worked for NBC as a staffman for Dick Cavett (1971) and ABC with Bobby Rosengarden in (1952). The list of musicians he collaborated with includes Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Stéphane Grappelli, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. Pizzarelli cited as influences Django Reinhardt, Freddie Green, and George Van Eps.

Jordan Rose Interview
The interview starts with Jordan sharing his early childhood and music. He grew up in a musical household. His mother still plays piano and organ at her Church. He chose percussion as his first instrument going into sixth grade and his private teacher (...) made sure he learned how to play jazz on drum set while learning the school curriculum.
Damon mentions how Texas has a great education system and Jordan elaborates on how his teacher Eric prepared Jordan to study with Joel Fulgham when he was a sophomore. Jordan got accepted to Kinder High School for the Performing Arts but did not attend.
Jordan went to the University of Houston and studied percussion and jazz for one year and took two years off for a church trip in Hawaii. Jordan attended Brigham Young University after Hawaii and eventually transferred to Berklee College of Music when he decided that he wanted to make it his career.
Marcos and Jordan were both attending Berklee at the same time but didn’t run into each other. Jordan mentions studying with Kenwood Dennard, Neal Smith, Jackie Santos. Marcos asks him about the bands that he did in the school. Some of Jordan’s favorite ensembles was with Darren Barret and studio drumming class with Steve Wilkes.
After graduating from Berklee he stayed in Boston for about a year and a half and met Lenny Bradford (Bass) and Eric Finland (Organ) at Wally’s during their Blues Jam. Lenny Bradford was working with Joe Louis Walker and hired Jordan and Eric to be their band. Damon shares a story with about recording an album with Joe Louis Walker that got nominated for a Grammy. Jordan talks about how Joe Louis Walker requires his drummers to have a tambourine on his hi-hat and Damon mentions recording with JJ Johnson and the engineer having a hard time mixing the drums because he also had a tambourine on his hi-hat.
Marcos and Jordan talk about how both NY and LA have amazing musicians and that pairing yourself with the right group of other musicians is as important as the skills you’ve developed on your own.
Damon shares a funny store when Jordan and him played a live show but showed up at the wrong building. While performing with Caleb Hawley Jordan was introduced to Theo Katzman and Joe Dart from Vulfpeck. He mentions how he became friends with Theo. Their first gig with together was during a halftime show for the New York Knicks game in Madison Square Garden with Louis Cato on bass. A year later Theo asked Jordan to be part of his tour, and also hired Cory Wong.
Damon and Jordan both did The Rock Boat Cruise at different times. Damon gave a shout out to Sixthman Company where they basically have a music festival on water. They share their stories how life on a cruise boat is. Jordan mentions doing both about Keeping the Blues Alive Cruise and the Kiss Kruise and meeting amazing musicians on board. He mentions meeting drummer Brian Tichy and being inspired by his showmanship.
Jordan shares insights on his different drum set ups. He mentions that Theo, Cory, or any of the Vulfpeck artists usually go for a more retro sound, 70’s vibe so he uses RootsEQ Solid heads on his drums. He also uses a towel on his cymbals
Jordan shares about his lesson with Aaron Sterling on recording drums and tips about setting up a home studio. They talk about different mic set ups and how
Jordan tends to mute more mics than what he uses when he records in his mixes. Jordan and many other drummers see the music industry shifting toward people knowing how to record on their own.
