In this 50th episode we interview percussionist Marc Quiñones and talk about his youth, growing up in the Bronx, playing with everyone in the salsa scene, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Allman Brothers, his influences, what he's practiced, and so much more.

Some of Marc's early influences (aside from his father, uncle and Tito Puente) are Milton Cardona, Gene Golden and Frankie Rodriguez.
Some of the Cuban music Marc listened to was Orquesta Aragón and Los Van Van.
Papo Pepin, Mongo Santamaria, and Ray Barretto are all Marc's first influences on congas. He memorized Papo Pepin's solo on Guancona performed by Tito Allen (the solo starts about 2.57)
This is a reprise of the 1973 Larry Harlow opera Hommy, that Marc performed in.
Marc calls Tito Puente as his main influence growing up and studying music. If he is recording all the percussion, he usually starts with congas, then records bongos next and then timbales.

The album with David Byrne was called Rei Momo. Marc refers to this band as the 17 piece traveling circus.
Marc was playing with Spyro Gyra in the 90s, and Butch Trucks was at a show in Tallahassee, Fl and "courted" Marc after a show before bringing him into Memphis to record with the Allman Brothers. The first tune Marc recorded on was "Kind of Bird" before joining the band on tour, and as a full time member.

Marc says his crowning achievement was playing on Tito Puente's 100th album called "The Mambo King"
